Not in my personal top 30 but I enjoyed this film. The chemistry between the two stars was amazing. The scene where Skip strokes Candy's face is very erotic.
Also, the happy ending didn't bother me. It's not impossible that they'll now live a normal life. After all, didn't Skip personally make arrangements for Moe's funeral.
There was indeed great chemistry between Peters and Widmark. Jean really looked her sexy best.

Jean Peters was stunning and smoldering hot. Richard Widmark was so sexy I wished all the time I was Jean Peters.
Truly one of the great couples of Film Noir who unfortunately only made one film together.
I love these old movies where people keep their clothes on in their love scenes, and yet the scenes are so sizzling, sensuous and steamy you better don't light any matches.

How did you not realize this?
The Hayes code was still in existence (no explicit and blatant display of sex, no profanity, no nudity), but that didn't mean sexual attraction could not be made quite clear. As long as the clothes stayed on.
The eroticism of the scene when he is caressing her face after roughing her up is quite breathtaking and frank.

They were outstanding together, I concur. In the DVD extra, for a 1994 biography on Fuller, Widmark said he and Peters really got along well. It's some of the most smoldering and sensuous work I have ever seen. It could easily have been done in Technicolor glory by Sirk, rather than the cartoonish imitating done by Rock Hudson with his leading ladies.

It's the first time such a thing happens to me. I was physically disgusted, almost unable to look.
It might be because they become semi-intimate just moments after he hit her very hard in the mouth.
Or it might be because I did not find the character and/or the face of Richard Widmark likeable! lol
