I loved the fast paste, big city setting.
Naked City is good. There's also a Farley Granger movie where, like Richard Widmark, he plays a small-timer who gets in way over his head.
There's also Night And The City (also with Richard Widmark), directed by Jules Dassin. Asphalt Jungle, dir: John Huston. The Big Heat, dir: Fritz Lang. Those three come to mind right away. All excellent, taut and gritty post-war noirs.
Where the Sidewalk Ends is a good one too
