Question on ending. SPOILER WARNING!

SPOILER WARNING! PLEASE READ NO FARTHER IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE.

I was wondering if any of you thought that maybe the Joseph Cotton character survived when he went over the falls in the boat. It never showed what happened after he went over and perhaps maybe he survived and swam ashore and got away. Thoughts?

Let me put it this way, if he did survive, I think he would be the first person to so without being in a sealed barrel. (And even some people in barrels didn't survive.)

Of course there always are first times.....

I know some movies have purposefully ambiguous endings. NIAGRA wasn't one of them for me. I thought he definitely died at the end.

But it's always nice to read others' views. Thanks!

People have gone over the falls, without a barrel and have
survived! I grew up around the Falls area in the 60's and
early 70's, and I guess maybe around 69, I was about 9 or
10 yrs old, and I remember being down at the falls the
same day an 8 year old boy went over in nothing more than
his bathing suit and one of those old orange life jackets!
He survived, and I think since then there have been at least
one or two others that have outside of someone trying to do
it as a stunt.. Pretty amazing! I spent my summers as a
river rat as I lived across the street from the Erie Canal,
and we all had boats the way that most kids have bikes,
and the greatest terror we had was going up into the waters
around Grand Island and getting caught in the upper rapids,
I had more than one nightmare about that!

Not at the time that this movie was made. Though the Hays code years were waning at this point, Cotton would still have to be punished for murdering his wife, as she had to die for causing the death of her lover inadvertently and for trying to murder her husband. If it was made in the 70's or later, who knows?

I watched it again and the when the boat went over it didn't land in any rocks so maybe he did survive and get away. What do you think?

reply

Regardless, he was trying to kill himself. He could have climbed up on the rock with Polly but he didn't even try.

Cotten's character did survive and, in fact, went on to skipper the S.S. Minnow.
