Joseph Cotton might have been better in 'Vertigo'

Just saw Joseph Cotton in "Niagara". He might have worked better as Scotty Ferguson because he plays the "sap" more convincingly, and doesn't carry the "George Bailey,Mr.Smith, L.B.Jeffries,Dr.Ben McKenna, western hero baggage" that Stewart brought to the role. His age would be the only questionable part. Will definitely expand on this later...
Having said that, let me admit that this discussion is purely academic. The principles are long gone, the film is almost 50 years old, and nothing can be done about it now. It is interesting to me to finally see the alternate ending (which foreign exhibitors demanded...don't forget that, and I like it very much. Provides some very much needed closure); and the realization that Hitchcock was displeased (in retropect anyway) with Jimmy Stewart's reception with the audience. So...maybe another actor would have been a better choice.
There is no doubt that "Vertigo" with Joseph Cotton would have been a much different film. Audiences expected "downbeat stories" with him, so he might have "fit right in with the plot"...who knows? My personal opinion is that he would have been a better "Scotty", and it would have been a much better film with him in the major role! "Turn over in your grave, Hitch!!".

Well, I don't think that his presence in "Vertigo" would have made me like "Vertigo" any better. I found that plot so ridiculous and unrealistic. Not anywhere near "Hitchcock's Greatest Film", as some people claim. Cotten is fantastic in this though, as in Shadow of a Doubt, another Hitchcock classic.

Thanks for your comments Nightshade007, and I agree with you. More B.S. has been written about that "bow wow" of a movie, than almost anything else. I do like Bernard Hermman's music, and the wonderful time capsule quality of the film...but all I can say is "arf, arf"...(what a dog)! Joseph Cotton would have been a much better choice...and maybe even Jean Peters...she is so subtle but great...! Might have more to say...

Thanks for your comments bosox n 03. Believe me, it took me a while to figure that out. If it's any consolation, the Oscars are just a bunch of B.S....most awards do not stand the test of time. For reasons stated previously, I just love "Niagara" ...it's great...!!

Well I disagree with every one of you, 'Vertigo' was a fantastic movie and Jimmy Stewart was perfect as Scottie, it can't get any better than that in my honest and humble opinion. But this is coming from a huge Jimmy Stewart and 'Vertigo' fan..

Joseph Cotten was good in the roles that HE played, not someone else's.

My two cents: I'm shocked (and relieved) that there are people out there besides me who find Vertigo overrated. Aside that that, Joe Cotten is a fantastic actor who brought so much to the table in many films, including his multi-faceted psycho role in Niagara.

Vertigo is my all time favorite movie. I don't think any movie reaches its quality. and Stewart is perfect in it.

All you niagara fans are wrong.

I really love Joseph Cotten and still don't understand why the man wasn't a bigger leading man than he was, but there's no improving on "Vertigo." It's a hell of a movie and Stewart's performance helped to bring that creepy quality to it.

No, no. James Stewart rocked that part. Joseph was great in this one and Shadow of a Doubt.

I like the idea of Cotten playing Stewart's role, Cotten may be older than Stewart but he looked younger and was more physically athletic.

I loved Vertigo btw.
