Marilyn's performance here
Is it just me or did she do a great job in her performance. I find it unfortunate that so many people still are blinded by her looks and cannot see her talent. She was great in Niagara.

shareSince her star was about to burst at this point, and she received top billing, I think Niagara was one of her best performances. Look at her facial expressions while she is in bed when her husband (Cotton) comes home in the beginning, the fake sleep and rolling of the eyes. Watch her talking and listening to Cotton rant as she knows she may not see him again. Her expressions supported her performance and Marilyn pulled it off. Jean Peters is good too. I like movies with strong female leads. Something we do not have any longer.
In the trivia part, they stated that Anne Baxter was to play the Jean Peters part but withdrew. They re-wrote the script to highlight Marilyn. Wonder what they removed or added. Always liked Joseph Cotton and his voice. Good suspenseful movie.

Her performance here suffered from the same key thing it almost always did: she couldn't subsume her own affected characteristics for the sake of her character.
Too many of her trademarks are on display: contorting her lips oddly around her words; the breathiness; the eye-popping; the always-seductive body language. She could do good work where those attributes coincided with the character's. But she could never disappear into a character. We're always, always seeing MM.
That's the danger of hiring someone who's invested in a carefully-constructed public facade. She couldn't afford to discard the persona she'd built so carefully.
In case it's not clear: I like Monroe. She's fun to watch. She seemed to have a good knack for comedy (she rocked How to Marry a Millionaire). By the time she got to The Misfits, she was at the height of her skills.
Here in Niagara (which I also like very much!), she does a very good job, because Rose could be played as some dark variation on "Marilyn™". But - just speaking for myself - I reserve the word "great" for performances where the actor disappears and we see only the character.

Nothing to see here, move along.
I've always considered this her best performance. It's also my favorite Marilyn Monroe movie. I always thought she was at her best in the dramatic roles (Niagara, River of No Return, Bus Stop) as opposed to her stereotypical ditsy blonde, sexpot type roles. She really did have acting talent. It's a shame it got wasted or overlooked so much.
shareThis is definitely one of her most impressive performances (maybe the best). Some say she lacked the depth needed for the role, but she did a very convincing job in my book. She brought a lot more to the movie than just eye-candy.
You want something corny? You got it!
She smouldered. She looked, sounded and even SMELLED like a woman with spirit who wanted LIFE. She was much better than most gave her credit.
shareI believe it is one of her best parts! Her voice was natural, she was very believeable in the role! So I concur!
What makes me post on IMDB? Temporary insanity!
She was great in Niagara. And this movie is near and dear to my heart since I have been to all of those places in the movie a zillion times (I live in Buffalo, NY). :)
