Jean Peters -vs- Marilyn Monroe...

I know that Marilyn Monroe (M.M.) was the idealized sex-symbol of the 1950s and is still considered a sexual icon in the 21st Century, but why? She seems overripe and soft wearing outfits that are too obvious. With stumpy legs like the wannabe candidate for President in 2016. Now Jean Peters has a balanced and fit figure, very 21st Century. I know which one that I would want to wake up next to and it is not M.M.

reply

Marilyn had charisma galore and blatant sex appeal but for sheer loveliness she couldn't compete with Jean Peters, one of the great beauties of the early '50s.

reply

TrippyTrellis; True M.M. did have a appeal when presented in the right characterization. Just not for me.

reply

Though MM got top billing in this picture -- she was certainly a draw at the time -- Jean Peters and Joseph Cotton are the real stars. Linda Darnell would have been much better in MM's part.

oldblackandwhite; Interesting choice, Linda Darnell. It appears by that time 20th Century Fox had given up on her. It may have revitalized her career.

reply

Agreed. I usually found Jean Peters absolutely gorgeous in all her films. The prototypical "cool brunette" versus the overt and at times almost ludicrous brassy blonde type as epitomized by Monroe, Jayne Mansfied, et all.

Of course, beauty is highly subjective so doubtless many will disagree.

reply

Ask anyone under the age of 20 if they've ever heard of Marilyn Monroe. Then ask them if they've heard of Jean Peters. Get my drift?

reply

J.P. was looking real good in those wet clothes at the end.

reply

srklondie: True, good body tone also, very fit.

reply

Watching the movie now, and I have no idea who Jean is but insure can't take my eyes off Marilyn.

MydnightRose: There are only two (2) young Women featured in the film. It should not be that hard.

reply

If they had dressed up Jean Peters in a skin tight cocktail dress and high heels also, and instructed her to do the same seductive walk, she would have easily been similarly remembered.

reply

Donald Trump has stumpy legs???

reply

Good one! I was thinking the same response when I first saw the thread title...

Too bad one of the Presidential debates isn't being held at one of the schools in Buffalo, NY this year. Saturday Night Live could have a field day spoofing Clinton and Trump by dressing "Hillary" up in those tight Marilyn Monroe outfits with her "stumpy legs" and then putting "The Donald" into Cotton's 1950's garb complete with fedora or porkpie hat. Then they could go after each other in a debate in the murderous style of their Niagara characters! Talk about ratings!!

Marilyn Monroe vs. Jean Peters is like the difference between the girls you want to date and be seen with vs. the ones you want to marry and be with.

Short-term glitz vs. Long-term substance.

[Sadly, these days many girls - as well as guys - don't recognize or realize the enormity of the difference.]

reply

raketex; A salient point, though believe Jean Peters combines both.

reply

Jean Peters was sexy and smart, a claim that cannot be made for Monroe.
