Romantic overtones betwen Jean peters' and Joseph Cotten's character

I know its months after you brought this up, but a far more interesting subject (to me, anyway), then the usual should they remake? Marilyn or Jean? claptrap.

I do think there was some feeling between the characters played by Cotton and Peters, though it was not sexual. I think Cotton saw Peters as the wife he wanted Rose to be--smart, funny, caring, kind; while Peters saw much wasted potential in Cotton--that had he not been so stuck on Rose as she puts it, and so damaged by the war, he could have been quite a guy. But their relationship never moved beyond those feelings because of the circumstances they were in. There was no time to explore them further.

Certainly on his side; he made some remark about how fabulous she was when she came to tend his hand. I thought their relationship the most interesting in the film - she was a great character - and it made Cotten's character, Loomis, more sympathetic as a result. The way he saves her at the end; so caring and yet he goes to his death.
