I actually own an Anylglyph (red/Blue) glasses 3D DVD of this, and I must say that I think the 3D was very well done.
Now the print I have isn't top notch and Blue\green glasses is far from being a great way to view 3D, but when used on a B&W film with an LCD TV, the results are at least watchable. They were good enough to show me I will snap this film up on 3D Bluray most likely the day it shows up. Also intend will get Creature From the Black Lagoon and Revenge of the Creature as soon as they show up in Bluray 3D.
The scene near the beginning shot through the fireplace looked great. So did the whole part where John Putnum went into the crater. Another excellent 3D scene was where Frank was on the telephone pole and George assisted John up the ladder. The rock-slide looked good and was one of only 2 obvious "In your face" 3D scenes in the movie.
For some reason All Movie guide states that there are no known 3D prints of this movie available. I'm not sure if they're referring to 35mm prints or if they are just mistaken but if I was able to get this with almost no trouble then at least some kind of 3D version exists. It seems they could remaster it and make an at least decent Bluray 3D release of it.
Now that I'm reading that there are 3D showings of this (even if they were not totally successful) I feel even more confident ICFOS will eventually get an official 3D release. Especially considering the increasing cultural acceptance of 3D these days and the fact that we are quickly reaching the point where it will be common to have 3D television in the home.
I also Have a 3D DVD of Creature From the Black Lagoon. That movie looks great in 3D too.
One other thing I should note:
When theaters tried to show these movies originally (in the early/mid 50's) it took some finesse to show these properly. Apparently this wasn't often the case. Many first time 3D viewers didn't see these films properly and were justifiably disappointed. (It didn't mean the films were poorly shot). Had the films been properly shown, 3D may have been the norm a lot sooner. I don't know what troubles theaters today are having showing the 3D versions of these old films today, but it's possible the films need to be remastered in a way that's compatible with the more modern 3D systems before we can fully appreciate these early 3D gems. Fortunately, there seems to be a good fan-base, and remastering these for 3D should be very worthwhile. It would be interesting to see what would happen if remastered original 3D versions of "It Came From Outer Space", "Creature From the Black Lagoon" and "Revenge of the Creature" ever got nationwide releases. You can bet I'd be sitting right there with my "TRU-3D" glasses watching!!
