All I know is the instrument used to create the creepy music was invented and used first in the classic Sci Fi gem "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (1951). It was used countless times after this. I remember first hearing it used in the TV outerspace series "Lost in Space".

Yes, it's a theremin.

The Theremin was actually invented about 30 years earlier.:

I like Theremin music. I would like to see this documentary about it's inventor as linked below:-

Back in the Eighties this was released on an Album on the Varesse Sarabande label with other themes from mostly fifites Universal Films. I don't know if this label still exsists but you could try doing a web search. By the way, they put out a slew of great movie and TV soundtracks and Im sure if they are still in bussiness most the ones I remember putting in stock(I was a record store manager back in the mid eighties) are probably still in print!!!

I have a CD called "Monstrous Movie Music" (MMM 1950) that has 14 tracks of music from the film. It's still in print. Just google "Monstrous Movie Music" for the website.

Many Universal movies displayed a single credit for the music to Joseph Gershenson as "Music Director".

In the case of ICFOS the actual composers were Irving Gertz, Henry Mancini and Herman Stein, all three of whom were uncredited.

Here is inventor Leon Theremin (after a brief introduction in Russian) playing this instrument. Very cool.
