What does Johnny keep calling Hondo, Amerado?

A very good movie, and some very good and funny reviews.

Geraldine Page is dynamite [not good looking but powerful performance], John Wayne still looks thin with the right camera angle, and Ward Bond is ...well Ward Bond.

Bonuses: A put upon James Arness and Vittorio the Indian with a heart.

And John Waynes's how to swim in one easy lesson is a classic. [Run Geraldine, Run]

He calls him Emberado, which is Hondo's Apache name, explained by Buffalo in the fort scene (though how the kid finds that out is not explained.)

reply

Emberato which means ill tempered one. thats how the apache names people. No grey wolf or spotted elk, but something that describes a prson. Like he who walks funny, or he who eats with hands etc.

reply

I was wondering about this name myself and how Johnny suddenly starts using it without explaination. I am most curious of the spelling and is it in fact a real Apache word ? Do you have any knowledge of that ?

reply

It could also be Spanish. Many, if not most Apaches were able to get along in Spanish, and many of them went by Spanish names, like Geronimo, Diablito, Cuchillo Negro, Delgadito, Juan Ladron and many others.

reply

I guess it would be an apache word because nor Emberado nor Amerado (i think it is better spelled Emberado) are spanish words.

reply

But of course only any possible Apache members would know if Emberado is a real Apache word or one made up for the movie.
