Hondo in 3-D

Having this movie on VHS I used my media database software (Ant Movie Catalog) to download the IMDB database info for the film. The comments that were downloaded implied the film was never released in 3-D. I would have to argue with that as, at 62 years old, I was able to view the movie in a theater, when it was released, in 3-D format...I'd have been about 10 years old. I'll never forget the spears and arrows seemingly coming out of the screen at the audience. One of my favorite John Wayne movies. Not quite The Searchers, but close.

Unfortunately, the 3-D system used for that broadcast was the inferior red/blue anaglyph system. When the film was originally shown, it was projected in the clear, poloroid format. By all accounts, it was a well shot film and the anaglyph version should not be used to judge the 3-D photography.

I remember the hookup WB had a few years ago with Circle K(?) where you could get a pair of 3D glasses to see special airing of Hondo on tv. Did anyone see it and what did you think of the quality. I bought the dvd version approved by the Wayne estate,not in 3D,and noticed a number of scenes were not sharp and clear,as if they needed to be cleaned up,perhaps stock footage. Also noticed scratch on right side of frame in a few shots. Suppose this was not noticed by most viewers. Wish they'd release ws(1:66-1) version enhanced for wide screen tv and clean up elements.

I watched that broadcast with the blue red cardboard glasses. It has "hosted" by John Wayne's daughter, whatshername.

If you got really close to the color TV screen, and squinted a bit, it wasn't too bad.

3D is almost useless on TV screens any smaller than 100 inches diagonally.

Even then, it's rarely worth the trouble. Even on movie screens it's marginal at best.

Yes, I'm the same age as you and I too saw it in 3-D at the movies when I was 10 years old. The part I remember most was the sad part where the dog is shown with an arrow through him; strong stuff for a 10-year-old country boy fond of animals.

Watching it now and there are definitely some 3D shots

Half Irish, Half German - hated by all. But at least I'm not Welsh

The movie was shown in the 3-D format at the 2013 TCM Festival in Hollywood. It was an unexpectedly good treat. I am not a big cowboy-movie fan, but the movie was quite enjoyable.

It's a shame they haven't released this on 3D for the home market......'Revenge of the Creature' (1954) was recently released on blu-ray 3D and I kid you not, the 3D looks incredible.

'Hondo' was indeed filmed using a 3D camera (like 'Revenge of the Creature' was). It created a troublesome production, but I think the fact that it was actually filmed with a 3D camera would just make the results that much more impressive and I'd love to see how it was meant to be seen.

But it's still a great movie in 2D and that's the only way I've ever seen it.

I saw it in 3-D tonight at the Museum of Modern Art. It was shown via digital projection. The image was sharp and the 3-D was generally quite good, although there were occasional shots that didn't work right, I couldn't tell why, and one whole sequence late in the film is filled with shots that aren't in 3-D at all. I didn't think it was a good movie, though. The script was off, with too many contrivances and way too much dialogue and an unconvincing romance between Wayne and Page. And the whole circle-the-wagons finale really confused me, because I couldn't tell what the strategy employed by Hondo and the cavalry was and why it worked. Still, I'm glad I saw it on the big screen.

i remember getting 3d glasses for it at a 7/11. it was a major television event!
