A worthwhile watch during the Thanksgiving season
A few weeks ago I went looking for Thanksgiving movies. After all, during whatever holiday season you're in, it's always nice to watch a few movies that are in some way relevant to the holiday. For Thanksgiving, however, that can be tricky. During Christmas there's a large mass of quality films to choose from, and during Halloween you can pretty much watch any horror movie and it will be appropriate, but Thanksgiving is a holiday that has been largely overlooked by Hollywood.
During my search I ran across Plymouth Adventure, a film that I had never heard of. The movie does not directly cover the event that we often call the First Thanksgiving, as it is principally focused on the journey of the Mayflower from England to the New World, but as the founding of Plymouth colony set the stage for the First Thanksgiving this struck me as a good one to watch.
I enjoyed the film overall. It has a great cast, some nice Technicolor cinematography, some nice set design, and one very well-done scene of the Mayflower weathering a torrential storm. The story begins at a harbor in England just before the Pilgrims set sail, then carries us through the journey on the Mayflower, and ends just after the first homes are built in Plymouth colony. My one complaint is that there is an adultery subplot which is non-historical and feels entirely out of place, but otherwise I think it's a fine film.
Has anyone here seen this one? It seems to be an almost entirely forgotten movie at this point.
