Time to ban the labels 'chick flick' and 'soap opera'?

Do films need this kind of label?

As of the last coroner's exam, sexism is alive and well. Thanks in part to women themselves (to include some feminists).

Time to ban the labels 'gay film' or 'AIDS film'? Time to ban the labels 'black film' or 'African-American film' or 'another piece of crap by Tyler Perry film'?

Etc. It's shorthand. I like soap operas, Kathryn Heigl sorts of "chick flicks" not so much. If I see something labeled "film noir", I might want to check it out. If I see it labeled "Made by Marvel" I avoid it like the ebola virus.

See how that works?

I have to agree. I don't like to know too much about the movie itself before I see it; no previews, no plot lines, no spoilers. However, I like the labels because they tell what kind of movie it is. There are certain labels that attract me and others that will cause me to pass on that particular movie. Though our preferences and dislikes may be different, I suspect, if we're honest, we could all say the same; we want to see what we like and skip what we don't.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]
