Invitation v The Heiress; were the fathers right? - Spoiler Alert

Spoiler Alert - This movie, Invitation, reminds me a lot of The Heiress. There are some differences and many similarities even though they're set in very different time periods.

I don't want to spoil either movie for anyone so please stop reading here if you haven't seen both movies. --

Though the daughters aren't exactly in the same position, their stories are similar. They're fairly plain, undesirable, motherless girls from wealthy families. By all accounts neither of them was expected to ever marry.

Did each father do the right thing by his daughter? A lot of people were angry with the father in the Heiress but there's less mention of that here; even though this one was rather sneaky and the one in the Heiress made his position clear.

Was Ellen's health a determining factor? Would things have been different if she hadn't been terminally ill? Are the fathers' actions the cause of each daughter's eventual fate or were the women ultimately responsible for how things turned out?

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]
