**Love this Film**

Westward the Women is one of my favorite films of all time. My sister and I discovered this film last year -- thank goodness for TCM. I love this film (and Robert Taylor too)! Ito is a riot...only he could tell Buck the brutal truth -- wonder what ever happened to him. The only thing I wished is that they show more of the main characters at the end dancing with their men and perhaps show us a year later with the sound of babies crying. I feel they cheated us a bit at the end but it was nice that they showed Patience getting in line with her future husband, the italian lady being paired up with no other than an italian man and, of course, Danon and Buck who finally shaved for the occasion and who at first did not want to get married. Why was Danon so afraid to cross 15 feet for Robert Taylor, LOL!!

I also wonder who Laurie would have been paired up if she didn't die. It seems that both Rose and Danon did not choose husbands except Danon had an eye for Robert Taylor (don't blame her for that!)

This is a real gem of a film.

you said it! Excitement, changes of personality, fear turned to daring and determination, survival under the worst conditions, and spirit ...spirit ...spirit!

One film that begs for a remake!

Although I love this film, too, I really don't want to see it remade. Really, who could top Hope Emerson in the role of Patience?

reply

excellent point. Roseanne, maybe?

reply

If she were still alive, I'd suggest Bea Arthur. Although she doesn't have the height, I have always liked Kathy Bates.

I would not want to see a remake made, either, but Jane Lynch could pull off the role of Patience. However, no one can replace Denise Darcel.

I saw this movie in 1951 in a theater and while I was only 10, I really liked it then. About 5 years later it was on tv and I watched it again with laughter and tears because I understood a lot more. Have probably seen it from beginning to end over 6 times and sometimes catch the end like today. It would be a shame to remake this. There are just no actors who could really do the job like the originals did. TCM shows behind the scenes making this movie and I've seen that a couple of times.

Wow....just saw this film on TCM. What a great movie. I agree with what has all ready been written about the great direction and acting. Loved this western. The last few scenes were just so well done. The entire film a real treasure. Thanks TCM for all the wonderful movie and thanks to IMDb and all the film fans that share with us on the site. Lori would have married Mr. Whittman. ;) He'd had plenty of mud baths, too.
