The 'Big' lady

Hope Emerson was great! I want to see everything she has done. I always loved her in 'Adam's Rib', and I just discovered this gem of a movie on TCM (bless 'em-I hope they just keep doing what they're doing). Is anyone aware of any interesting things about this woman?

She was a moving force in this movie. She was a bit rough around the edges with a heart of marshmallow and very capable.

Miss Emerson plays a similar role in The Guns of Fort Petticoat, starring Audie Murphy.

Fort Petticoat is another good one.

When the women enter the town, she's calling to her horses (mules) in a rough voice, "COME ON ROSE, COME ON ??????" Then she realizes that there are men about and she softens her voice, "come on rose, come on ?????." Had to chuckle at that.

The other mule was named Jake.
For another side of Hope Emerson, see Caged with Eleanor Parker. Her portrayal of the evil prison warden is nightmare-inducing.

Hope Emerson actually had an interesting recurring role in some of the early 'Peter Gunn' episodes, playing a tough, sympathetic urban bar-restaurant owner. Of course her big claim to fame is as the evil prison guard in "Caged" where she clearly is given subtle lesbian tendencies....but the great thing about Ms. Emerson is that her camera comfort and naturalism hid a highly satisfying range. Sort of a natural star - and I agree completely about her quality.
