I was born in Anchorage, and currently live here. Winters can be as bad as depicted. Although it seems that there was more snow when I was a kid. The area, often referred to as the Anchorage Bowl, is both a wide valley & a port city; so we get some strange weather. And the winters are very long up here.
However, travel to most other towns in Alaska and the winters are easily as bad as shown, if not worse. Remember, there's more than 600,000 square miles, and the farther north you go, the nastier the weather...
