Christian Nyby on The Thing (1982)

“If you want blood, go to the slaughterhouse. All in all, it’s a terrific commercial for J&B Scotch.” – Christian Nyby

Wow. I didn't know he hated John Carpenter's movie that much.

The gore is over the top in the Carpenter version, of course, but it's spectacularly done by the great Rob Bottin, and everything else from the acting to the writing to the score is vastly superior to the '51 version. In the 1951 version the characters are mostly mildly bemused at the existence of an eight-foot tall genius vegetable man who wants to take over the world, finding time to joke about coffee and the male pattern baldness of the chatty newspaper reporter who's along for the ride and being given free rein to write a story about the whole thing by the military, who has made entirely public every happening at the North Pole science station involving said alien vegetable man. The '51 version is perfectly enjoyable as camp, but everything about it is preposterous, and this is coming from someone who is an absolutely huge fan of Howard Hawks.

If the gore is over the top, then it is not spectacularly done by anyone. Gratuitous violence and gore are unnecessary and take away from letting the viewer feel for the characters. It desensitizes the viewer to further scenes of violence.

wrong. anything can potentially be over the top and still work if it's done masterfully(the gore in david cronenberg's "the fly",the acting in andrei zulawski's "possession",the writing and directing in oliver stone's "natural born killers" for instance).

"Gratuitous violence and gore are unnecessary and take away from letting the viewer feel for the characters."

are you speaking for everyone? because you shouldn't be. it didn't keep me from feeling for the characters.(also i again refer you to cronenberg's "the fly",which is much loved for it's emotional core).

"It desensitizes the viewer to further scenes of violence."

is that bad? also, whole lot of arbitrary statements going on...
