Rhett Butler

Howard Keels character (Gaylord Ravenal) I think is a little based off of Rhett Butler (Clark Gable). And i think that if Clark was about 10 years younger and could sing, he could have played Gaylord Ravenal

Marie: Jesus Clark wheres your teeth?

Clark: In my back pocket biting my ass!

Not possible the novel of "show boat" was published in "1926". "Gone with the wind" was not published until "1936"

Had never thought of Keel as a kind of singing Gable until.now.

It's entirely possible that Keel modeled his performance on Gable's, to some degree.

But yeah, there are certain parallels between the two characters, the fantasy of the gentlemanly bad boy. Rhett Butler was the fantasy of the rich and passionate bad boy, the worthless Gay Ravenel is the reality.
