The Ellie of Edna Ferber's novel is a much different person than the Ellie of the show, so don't worry if you're not finding her in the novel. Assuming you'll be doing the R&H Library edition, forget the 1951 film and rent the 1936 film. In addition to Ellie's dialogue scenes and "Goodbye, My Lady Love" at the Trocadero, much the same in the 1936 film, you'll probably also be doing "Life Upon The Wicked Stage", but you will not be doing "I Might Fall Back On You". The R&H script is largely based on Oscar Hammerstein's 1946 revisions. If you can get it, by all means get your hands on John McGlinn's 3-CD set of the score. You'll learn everything you will and will not be singing. I can't recommend it highly enough. Have fun!
