When was this Story Supposed to have Taken Place?

I'm fairly good at my history, but I'm a little confused about when this story is supposed to have taken place. The men's styles look like the 1850's and the people in the South look prosperous, as if the Civil War hasn't yet taken place, but the women's costumes look like the 1870's and in the play Gaylord is dressed in a confederate uniform. Can anyone tell me the correct answer?

In the original show it ran from the late 19th century up until the 1920's. The film started at the same time but was shortend by being finished when "kim" was still young (4 acording to cast list). Where the show (and the 1936 film) does not end until she is about 18.

Gay is dressed in a Condederate uniform in a play that the show boat company performs on the boat, but that's just a costume, and the movie itself takes place in the 1880's.

That's a big difference from the original show and the other film versions, in which the story begins in the 1880's and ends in the 1920's.
