Should there have been a sequel?

I don't mean the '90s musical nor a remake.

Should we have seen what happened to Norma 25 years later?? Swanson died in 1983, so there was plenty of time.

Did she beat the rap?

Non-sequiturs are delicious.

No (to sequel). She was comitted in my eyes. no need to delve into that.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

Are you asking about Norma Desmond or Gloria Swanson?

But either way, I'm not sure I'm interested. Sunset Blvd. is perfect, and complete, as it is.

I agree that no sequel is needed. I love this movie and have seen it numerous times. At the end, when Norma has gone totally around the bend, the way she walks down the staircase is wonderful. The way all the reporters and police officers stop and watch her -- the way she moves her arms -- the way she gets to the bottom and says she is ready for her close-up -- they just do not make movies like that any more!!

I think after "Norma" makes her last speech and walks toward the camera, the way the scene dissolves, it is her stepping over (fully) into insanity.
Not sure what more could be done with the character after that (ie I have thought of it as a "happy" ending, because she doesn't really know what is going on anyway).

BOY, bringing back Joe would've been a helluva feat for the screenwriters for the sequel. Unless you make it into a fantasy/science fiction episode.

I've always thought a prequel would be interesting, going back to the silent film days and centering on Norma and Max. He was one of her directors AND her first husband. That's got to be some story. Of course, this thought only occurred to me after seeing the musical with Glenn Close in the 1990s. I was hoping the thought would occur to Andrew Lloyd Webber too.

She probably spent a few years in an asylum, and was released into Max's custody. She lived the rest of her life as a total recluse in his care. Nothing much of interest took place during those years. There were a lot of cats.
