great film,a bit of a history lesson
I always watch this film when it is on tv,usually CHANNEL 4.
It has an interesting plot, well written and well acted.
It would be easy to laught at the depiction of social class, women and the way people do what they are told butit was made only 5 years after the end of World War 11 and Britain had peacetime conscription and huge armed forces.
Most of the British people had been used to wartime restrictions so they would not have rebelled against being told what to do.
If like me you are interested in topics such as civil defence, emergency planning and the Cold War then this film seems realistic.
They did have plans to evacuate millions of people from the cities in emergency situations and they did have plans to safeguard national treasures such as the Crown Jewels.
With the invention of the H bomb they dropped the idea of evacuating civilians.
See the film THE WAR GAME or read the book BENEATH THE CITY STREES by PETER LAURIE.
