The woodcutter treks a long way into the mountains to get wood. He brings with him an axe, but no backpack or anything to carry the wood back with.

Which is why his story is also in doubt. It fits right in with unreliable narrator theme of the movie.

All he would need is a length of thin rope to tie together a bundle. That's how poor people accomplish this task. A pack would just make the load heavier.
