Impressive Dialogue
I really enjoyed all the "adult" acting in this movie, and to me the script was a cut above other "weepers." There was quite a bit of snark and sarcasm, much of it very witty, which fit into the depiction of NYC lifestyle. It also showed that no one was naive or so innocent. The character of Lily had been fighting off men since a teenager, and had both an emotional need for love playing against the need to protect herself from being vulnerable. I was pleasantly surprised at a lot of the dialogue, which I thought more well-done and sophisticated than even the best of the "women's pictures" of that era. And the music was fabulous!
