Was Cinderella her real name?

I don't think I've read the original fairytale (I know there are many, I've read short versions as a kid which do differ from the Disney version) but I think 'Cinderella' refers to her having the sweep the cinders in the fireplace. I know I'm analysing the movie in a pedantic way pretending the world it happened in was real, but obviously you wouldn't think that Cinderella's parents would have named her that when she was born...I'm wondering if it explains that in the fairytale? If Cinderella is her real name or just another name that was given to her.

In the original story her name isn't Ella, she's nameless. The sisters call her Cinderella (or Cendrillon in French and Cenerentola in Italian) as a reference to cinders.

That's correct, the stepsisters called her that as a way of mocking her. In the original story she's nameless.

The only time I'd previously read that her real name was Ella was by playing Trivia Pursuit - so of course it's not necessarily right!

Her real name is Ella

In the book ''The Glass Slipper'' by Eleanor Farjeon, and the 1955 film ''The Glass Slipper'', her name was Ella. In the original story (and most of the variants) her real name was never mentioned. The Stepsisters spitefully called her ''Cinderella''.

I read in a book her name was Ella and since she was always covered in cinders they nicknamed her Cinderella

Perrault's 1679 French version "Cendrillon" uses only the nickname which translates into English as Cinderella, because she was so often covered in cinders.

Basile's 1634 Italian version is also called Cinderella, Cenerentola, but gives the girl's name as Zezolla.

The earliest variant of the story dates from the 1st century BC, where she is called Rhodopis, and even has a pair of rose gilded slippers.

In this version, her actual name is Cinderella.

Once upon a time in a faraway land, there was a tiny kingdom; peaceful, prosperous, and rich in romance and tradition. Here in a stately chateau, there lived a widowed gentleman, and his little daughter, Cinderella.
