Why couldn't Ralph have hocked the gift he was gonna give Alice,instead of his bowling ball?
Than Alice's gift to him would have been useful.

He paid a sizable amount of money for the box, because some hustler told him that it was smuggled out of the palace of the Emperor of Japan. It was only when he saw that the neighbor had bought it as a kitschy little gift that he realized that he'd been ripped off. There's no way he could have hocked it since it was really only worth about two-three dollars in 1950s money.
