Flying Forts

The Martin Caidin book Flying Forts contains details on several of the story lines mentioned in the movie. Bishop being nominated for the MOH and then getting shot down (he survived), the gunner whose arm was severed and the crew helped him bail out to get quick medical attention. Lots of other great stories in the book but it is hard to find.

rfirment:

Now I MIGHT just be wrong but I think Caidin may have 'filched' some of his anecdotes from Bernie Lay's wartime writings.

Caidin didn't have to "filch" anything. Not only was Lay in England to write reports of 8th AF missions (what might be called "after-action reports" or AARs today) at the time (He would have been one of the men at the "ball-bearing" briefing at HQ in the movie.)-- he is also credited in the Acknowledgements in Caidin's book abt Schweinfurt,"Black Thursday," along with the Research Studies Institute at USAF's Air University, and dozens of interviews conducted and hundreds of 1st-hand debrief reports read for the book.

Sorry...wrong choice of words on my part.
