Dean Jagger

It's several years since I saw Twelve O'Clock High and, frankly, Gregory Peck's performance is the only one I remember clearly. I like Dean Jagger in other films - he was a very reliable character actor in many films - but those who know this movie better than I, what did he do to deserve the Oscar? Was it recognition for an already busy career or did he have one or more big Oscar moments in the film?

reply

Yes, he deserved the Oscar for this film. His performance is superbly understated as the older veteran adjutant who has to watch all the young men go off to die.

Actually Ralph Richardson gave a much more sustained, nuanced performance in THE HEIRESS. Although Richardson was clearly in a leading role, he was nominated in the supporting category. But I don't begrudge Jagger his Oscar.

I'll have to look for the Heiress that's a high accolade. Stupid that the academny nominated him for supporting. Sometimes I don't know what they're thinking.
