great film,better without Wayne

I like John Wayne but he was not the right actor for all the parts he ended up playing.
Wayne was meant to play the part Peck plays in this but Wayne would have been wrong for this,Peck plays it as an strict, intelligent but flawed leader,it is hard to believe that Wayne could have played it better.

Some of the comments on this film amaze me,this is a great film,I don't see how cannot see it is not just another Hollywood war film.

I agree!!!

ib011:

I liked Peck in this flick too---in fact I found it uniformly well acted;

HOWEVER, I am puzzled why that "Juanny" sockpuppet keeps trashing Wayne HERE; why doesn't he buck up & go to Wayne's page & give them the benefit of his wisdom?

I think John Wayne played only one character and he played it great and that's the role of John Wayne. Trouble was he had such a great presense that it often overshadowed whatever film and other characters he played.

Let me add that Peck was absolutely outstanding in this role. John Wayne or no John Wayne.

reply

I agree. I'm not sure all John Wayne's films have aged well. Twenty years I thought he was great in "The Longest Day" then I watched it again at the weekend he stuck out as too old for the role he was playing.

I agree - Wayne would probably have made Savage little more than a puffed-up blowhard.

reply

I think John Wayne would've done just fine in the role.

Yeah I don't think he fit very will in this.

Actually, I think he needed a film like this.

I think Wayne would have done a very good job as Savage. He could be an excellent actor when he needed to be, he just didn't make a big deal out of it like some other actors, especially the "method" ones. However, that is not to say that Gregory Peck didn't an do a great, A-#1 job in this movie, one of the best WWII and aerial combat films of all time by far. Just my two cents...

Wayne DID play this role in Flying Leathernecks, except he didn't crack up like Peck's character in TOH.

reply

Exactly right, it was the same movie just one with Marines and the other with 8th. This one was better, but Flying Leathernecks is a pretty good film.
