Casting
I can't think of a movie that has better castings - superb. Olivia was the perfect choice, no one else embodies sweet honesty, wholesomeness, sincerity and absolute stealy resolve as Ms. Havilland.

shareThey was thinking about casting Errol Flynn for the role of Morris Townsend but, that wouldn't have worked. For one thing is he was too old at that time, only several years younger than Ralph Richardson, who played Catherine's father.
shareCary Grant as Morris would have been brilliant.
shareI usually think Cary would be wonderful in just about anything, but not this. He was 45 and while a youthful 45, it would've been a major miscast.
sharewhat british medical school did sloper graduated from? i know he went to paris for his wedding vacation. i read washington square 30 years ago when i worked in manhattan and got to visit washington square and i don't recall sloper living in england. i know henry james was in love with england. he became a british subject one year before his death, but washington square is very american. any american actor would have been perfect. i know olivia was born in japan, but she came to california when she was 3. and even though her parents were british, she spoke english as an american. hollywood always wanted to be realistic about the characters they portrayed, but richardson is fully miscast.
