John Hart
Does anyone know WHY John Hart replaced Clayton Moore?
shareI seem to remember there was a salary dispute.
Hart was lame, and ABC insisted they bring back Moore the following year.
Probably as a result of a salary dispute, from 1952-53 Clayton Moore did 3 serials, numerous small parts on TV westerns and a lot of extra work. I spotted him in the opening fight scene in "Shane". Episodes with John Hart as The Lone Ranger, were never shown when reruns were aired on CBS on Saturdays. Hart later starred in "The Last Of The Mohicans" series for 1 season. He can be seen briefly in a cameo role in the 1980 feature version "The Legend Of The Lone Ranger". That was a part Clayton wanted but he was turned down because of his age and led to a temporary ban of his appearing as "The Lone Ranger". Clinton Spillbury (as in Pillsbury) got the part and the movie bombed. It can be seen as of late on Cable.
shareIn addition, Hart appeared as the Lone Ranger (playing himself doing a promo appearance at a Mall Opening [?]) in an episode of the Greatest American Hero.

Contract problem led Moore to do movies and appearances on other shows like Gene Autry, Range Rider and such. Hart did not win kids over so they renegociated and brought back Moore.
shareMoore says in his autobiography that he was never told why he was replaced; he did acknowledge that he liked to drink, and I heard that his drinking had become a problem. Hart was a decent actor, but no one could touch Clayton Moore at what he did best. Both are very good men - Phyllis Coates was Hart's girlfriend for 3 years in the 50s (they met while making a Whip Wilson western) and was very close to Moore, whom she adored.
I'm close to Phyllis, who told me Moore was always professional, always knew his lines. They made one serial together - "Jungle Drums of Africa" - which they both detested. Phyllis lost her hearing in one ear during production when a prop gun went off close to her head. Incidentally I met Phyllis through John Hart, a tall, well-built, and very generous man who was in his 70s when we met.
