Hans Christian Andersen's
This film takes some inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen's tale, "The Red Shoes' in which a orphan girl, Karen becomes so enamored of the red dancing shoes bought for her by her adoptive mother that she becomes vain, spoiled, and thinks of nothing but dancing. In time the shoes take on a life of their own, making her dance and dance, no matter her weariness and exhaustion, until finally she has the executioner amputate her feet having them replaced with wooden feet, but the shoes continue to dance in front of her with the amputated feet inside, preventing her from even going to church to beg forgiveness. Alone in her room Karen prays begging for mercy and an angel appears, granting her prayer, after which she is filled with gratitude and joy so great that her heart bursts and she dies. The tale is re- told in this movie by Boris.
