John Ireland

Red River is one of my favorite pictures. Everyone in the cast is great, especially, Montgomery Clift and John Wayne of course. The underlying love and respect they have for each other throughout the film is really a special part of the picture. However, is it me or do others feel that John Ireland as Cherry almost steals the picture.

I wouldn't say steal, but he is charismatic as hell. I also like the background redemption arc he kind of has. He goes from hired gun to willing to defend his friend. I recently saw the remake and really didn't like what happened there. I also felt Gregory Harrison was miscast, maybe because I'm used to him in the straight good guy role.

Harrison had to have a role in the remake, and a good one. He produced the picture.

That was acting. John Wayne didn't like Monty Clift because he didn't drink and play poker all night with him and the boys. Clift wasn't a macho kind of guy, he didn't understand that kind of overt style of male bonding. He was more of a loner type. I think that John Wayne didn't understand Monty Clift.

When Hawkes made RIO BRAVO, he wanted Clift for the Dean Martin role but Clift turned it down. He didn't want to work with Wayne and Hawkes again. Still Clift worked with Martin to improve his acting so that he'd be better in the film.

Bored now.
