Cameo in opening sequence?

One of the final scenes in the opening narration depicts a crowd of people trying to force their way on to a subway car. There's one guy who gets squeezed out; we mostly see him from behind, but as he turns away you can see from the side that he's got a big grin on his face. Had that been in real life, that guy would be steamed, not smiling.

I'm wondering if that guy was a director or producer doing a Hitchcock-like cameo or just an unnamed extra. Anyone know?

the extended credits say it is Neamiah Persoff---in his first roll

LT. Luger from Barney Miller's first roll too.

Actually, it's "role".
