Very last scene of man sweeping up yesterdays newspapers in none other then Weegee the photographer whose book, "Naked City" was the basis of this film. The opening scenes are also based on Weegee's photographs in Naked City (1945) and Weegee's People (1946).
shareThat is so awesome! I just TiVo'd he movie from TCM and had to go back to the closing shot to see him. (His face is turned away from the camera but you can see his characteristic short stocky build.) I saw his book "Naked City" in the bookstore and always thought it was inspired by the movie-- but obviously it was the other way around, which makes more sense.

shareYou might want to track down the film "The Public Eye", with Joe Peschi, playing a "Weegee" type photographer in New York. It just came out on DVD-R through Universal Classics not too long ago. My local library tracked it down for me, through interlibrary loan. You kind of get the feel of what it was to be like him, and what he had to go through.
