Left-wing critique of America?

Does the movie demonstrate a left-wing critique of America? What are your thoughts?

reply

Because it shows that crime exists in a capitalist society?
Because director Jules Dassin may (or may not) have been a communist in the 1930s?
This is as ideologically neutral a film as can be imagined.
My turn: Are you daft?

reply

no, more along the lines of a murder investigation in a large city in the U.S.

reply

Frankly I'm more curious about your thoughts--how did you arrive to this assessment?

Not at all.

I think it was Billy Wilder who said that film noir was about monstrous people doing monstrous things to one another.
