'Howston' St?

I'm not a New Yorker, so I acknowledge I may not be aware of a native New Yorker pronunciation of Houston St. When Halloran has located Garzah & phones it in from the soda store, he says he's on "Norfolk St between Rivington and "how-ston".." (not "hew-ston"). Can any New Yorker weigh in? Do y'all (or did New Yorkers ever) pronounce the street "how-ston"?

reply

Yes, I was surprised the first time I heard it, but it's "Howston". SoHo is South of Houston.

reply

Yes, the correct NYC pronunciation of Houston St. is indeed "How-ston". Do not ever pronounce it like the city! Your tourist status would be painfully obvious. :)

reply

We New Yorkers derive considerable entertainment ridiculing tourists who pronounce it Hews-Ton Street.

reply

The street is pronounced that way because it was named for William Houstoun (1755—1813), American planter, lawyer, and statesman, and that's how he pronounced his name. He served Georgia as a delegate to the Continental Congress and to the United States Constitutional Convention in 1787.

reply

Yes, when I visited New York, that's how they pronounced the name.
