Actually, they could have sold the place for more than they paid for it, as the land in a nice area with a gorgeous modern house would be worth a lot more than the same plot with a tumbledown old ruin on it. I don't know if they could have sold it for more than they paid for the original house plus the costs of construction, but it's entirely possible. So they'd have had to live tight until Mr. Blandings got another job, but it wouldn't have been disastrous.
But as it was, the maid saved their asses and all was prosperously well. I hope they put her kids through college in the years to come, because a "Thank you" and a raise wasn't enough.
