Pleasant surprise

I saw this film for the first time a few days ago at NYC's MoMA - a beautiful restored 35mm print. It was much better than I expected it to be, considering the negative press it has garnered all these years. Very moving and inspirational, and a great performance from Ingrid Bergman.

yeah, i found her portrayal more captivating and sincere than other versions, after seeing the 1928 version this had a nice natural flow to it in comparison and i didn't have to stay glued on subtitles and could enjoy the acting instead, there are some very well known hollywood actors in this, the photography is beautiful and from where i got this it had amazing picture quality, i was also surprised it being in colour, when she walked through the wasteland i got a henry bemis (twilight zone) vibe, the settings look a bit off though, even though she dresses up like a dude and cut her hair there's no way she passes as a fella as they are doubting her in the scene early on, i remember reading there was a similar situation like this with sophia loren but instead of changing her appearance they just let her keep her looks and went with the role anyway, i actually don't have a problem with modifying it for a movie experience like that, it's like all my life i've heard some people complain about when a movie is unrealistic, if you want reality turn off the tv and go out on the streets. they clearly modified the outfit to suit though, it appears sometimes as if her boobies will knock the camera away, favorite bits is when she tells the tough brutes "there will be no swearing in this army", and when a guy starts screaming hysterical "the witch, the witch" and the guy beside him calmly knocks him down, also "the witch is down, england has won". even though we all know how it will end it was awful to watch.

since i gone around the bend,
got one of a kind story to tell,
but people wont look at me the same,
in the mirror dont recognise myself,
since i gone around the bend.
