... looked very similar in this film. They had the same hairstyles twice while their faces were alike too! A bit confusing I must say.

Lovely broadshouldered clothes they wore, almost always very fancy evening dresses! Dig the silver pajamas Audrey wears with heels when she first meets Joan again.

Poor, Joan Caulfield. She was ok but could never become a huge star even if the studio tried hard. I wish they would have used Veronica Lake instead, but she was at Paramount....

Joan Caulfield was perfect. She projected just the right amount of vulnerability and emotional brittleness that the part required. Someone who could come apart at any moment. VL was more the steamy, sexy vamp type. JC all the way in this.

I agree. The dynamic was perfect between bitchy tough-minded Totter and teetering Caulfield. The friction was great because Totter has the will and guile but Caulfield had the trump card of having control of the coin. The relationship is very different if the characters were more evenly matched. I think this is the key to it. Totter took her husband, and was well on her way to find a way to get the cash too.

I agree with the OP in that I felt Caufield's performance (along with Ted North's) was merely ok. She was better in the latter scenes when suspicions give way to reality. However, Rains and Totter are so good in this (along with a game supporting cast) that it hardly matters.

Great film, a must for fans of Rains. The radio show backdrop is a nice touch.

I was confused by Totter and Bennet also. It took me a while to figure out who was who. Something should have distinguished them. They had the same hair and clothing style.

I wish I were wealthy enough to buy larger-screen televisions or thicker specs for all of you who had a problem distinguishing between Audrey Totter and Constance Bennett. Sizzling Audrey was 30 years of age, while Constance was 43 and showing it. Not that Constance didn't look good to me nevertheless, but then I'm and an old man, so my standards may be low....
