It's a little unfathomable but EGR, as great as he was, never won an Oscar. There were so many movies where he could have won one such as Scarlet Street, Key Largo, and others.
His performance in this movie could have won an Oscar. His outburst to Judith Anderson with about 22 minutes left in the movie was brilliant. I'm talking about the part where he says "All right, so I'm not fair, but I can't let her go."
He did a really good job in this movie of being dramatic without being melodramatic. I was impressed.

Some say it was because he was Jewish, but Paul Muni was Jewish too, and that didn't hold him back.
He's one of those actors from the classic period of Hollywood that was taken for granted. He almost always gave solid performances, was in a lot of good movies, was apparently a good colleague, but just never got the prize. He should have won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Double Indemnity, he's fantastic in that (Barry Fitzgerald won for the insipid Going My Way).
