One Thing That Doesn't Ring True

Is the casting of short, skinny Lon McAllister as the guy that both young women lust after when the tall, muscular, dangerously handsome Rory Calhoun is available.

I'm not a woman nor am I gay, so maybe there's something about Lon McAllister I'm not getting.

I am gay and I'll take Lon McAllister over clone pretty boy Rory Calhoun any day. However, in terms of the movie, Tibby doesn't really have that much interest in Nath except as meal ticket, she's flirting with Teller at the start. Ellen has no interest in Teller, she's madly in love with Nath.

Yes, but the meathead was also uneducated and likely a criminal. Tibby was attracted to him, and threw Nate away for him, only to find out the meathead was on the lam for murder, and probably robbery of that $750. Of course innocent Meg probably wouldn't be attracted to such a brute, and in fact we never see her innocence tainted with his drippingly illicit presence.
