Costume trivia
Dave Goldman (John Garfield's character) wears the uniform of a captain in the U.S. Army Engineers. At the bottom one of his sleeves there are eight small gold stripes. Each one signifies six months in a combat zone. It strikes me that after four years, he should also have had some ribbons on his chest, if not rewards for things that he had done, at least campaign ribbons for places he had been.
