Great old classic
One of Gregory Peck's best, takes a plot that could have been gimmicky or preachy right down the fine line between in a totally entertaining way. Celeste Holm is also especially brilliant!

I do agree that the film is somewhat dated, but I would just want to add what a courageous step it was to produce and release this film at that time. Antisemitism was the last thing anybody wanted to deal with when they decided to spend a night at the movies. People were already tired of hearing about the Holocaust (which had only become public knowledge a few years before this film was released). It was a major risk for a studio at that time.

It was a superb film, beautifully acted.
I read that both Peck and McGuire were warned that appearing in it could hurt their careers! I find that horrible.
an important film--bravely made for its time
In a reply to a fan letter I wrote to June Havoc in 1999, June, who played Peck's Jewish secretary in the film, said the film was "very daring for Darryl Zanuck to produce, especially at that time."
shareYes, it was. I understand both Peck and McGuire were warned (they were both starting out) that it could ruin their careers.
it's shocking really.
that's nice that you wrote and received one back. Zanuck was very brave, indeed. I always admired him for that.
