Nosy Postman

I wouldn't call this a plot hole. The postman was nosy and probably did see the return address had Paul's name but what you may be forgetting is this was just after the war. Delays in mail delivery could have caused a letter Paul sent Marise prior to his death to arrive later.

The entire movie, or at least the flashback from Jean's arrival in town to when Paul arrived, happened during the span of a week. Whatever official notice Marise received about Paul's death would have only recently arrived because Jean went directly to Paul's house following their escape.

Though not really a plot hole, the two things I had problems with in the movie was:

1. Paul seemed to have no idea who the guy was who came to 'fill his shoes'. Even if he'd told many of the men in the prison camp about his wife, he should have immediately suspected Jean since that's who he had been with after their escape. Marise said the man had confirmed Paul's death; claiming he had seen it with his own eyes. Paul also described Jean in negative terms once he did learn who had been there.

2. Having been such a terrible person his entire life, it's kind of hard to believe Marise didn't see through him. She shared a home and spend most of that week in his company. Even someone trying to be different or who claimed had been influenced to change by her would have shown his true colors on more than one occasion; just as he did when Father Donnard stopped by. He wouldn't have been able to control himself especially after he realized Paul was still alive and heading home.
