Overkill?

So, Kirk Douglas and Barbara Stanwyck think that maybe, just maybe, Van Heflin might remember what happened to the aunt at the beginning of the film, and might, just might, make trouble about it?

So, they have the hell beaten out of him...just in case?

Excellent question, but the reason the answer is "No" is that both characters are narcissists. Sam (Douglas) is a coward and an alcoholic, too. Martha is just a plain sociopath.

I found it very believable -- they saw their entire empire possibly falling and acted out. The film really effectively established that Douglas was a coward and so I completely believe that he'd immediately panic and act in the extreme.

Heflin was Sam. Douglas was Walter. Walter had Sam beaten up; Martha, although a sociopath, had nothing to do with it.
