1st role Brilliance

This is so strange a film, that it deserves special attention. Douglas' role is so well acted. Nice job, all around.

great finish for his first time out, and an unforgettable (camera) shot.

Great performances by Kurt Douglas and Barbara Stanwyck. Would love to see this on the big screen sometime instead of just video.

Observation: It seemed like the musical score was overwhelming at times. Did anyone else feel that way? I love classics, but I often feel they overdo it with the strings.

reply

I thought so, too. It was the times and that particular composer, too.

Douglas blew everyone else off the screen. He had "star" written all over him.

He was indeed fantastic. But he did not "blow everyone else off the screen". Every single part was played to perfection.
This film ties for first place with "Angel Face" among my all-time favorite noirs. Extremely well-done, thanks in no small part to all the actors involved.

Yeah, it's no wonder Kirk Douglas went on to be the star he is now after this very good film debut.

Some of my thoughts: There is just too much strong "fairy music" in the background. Off topic from that, an odd thing sticks with me, out of so many great things in this film: Martha looked so sexy from the eyes when Sam kissed her in the car, after they returned from the run they made together to the woods with the fire. Aside from everything else, pretty much, I felt bad for “stuffy nose talking” Toni though -- hehe -- 'cause she was such a cute sweetie.

I love how everything came to a head with Walter. By the close, he just wasn't taking that bull any more. Kirk really hit the jackpot for his first time out. I mean, this is a definite classic and he got into his "A+ game," like he knew it was gonna be.

I didn't realize during my first viewing of this film that this was Kirk Douglas' first film credit. I was sure based on their screen persona that Mr. Douglas would play Sam and Van Heflin would play Walter. Little did I know that Mr. Douglas hadn't developed a screen persona yet!

I see you like Jim Hutton...I just saw him in a film I want to comment on, Peckinpah's Major Dundee.

That's one I didn't enjoy, I'm afraid.

It was clear that Kirk Douglas was going to become a leading actor by looking at this debut for him. He does grab the viewers' attention with what were to become his trademark mannerisms.
