Also at the same time you have to consider that Martha was a young juvenile and it could have been a manslaughter charge under the circumstances and they would have at the most sent her to reform school and that is a maybe. When the cruelty of the aunt was exposed I am sure that would have been a big factor in the judge and jury and Martha would have been able to get a good lawyer. It would have been better to have called a lawyer first and then call the police and make a clean breast of things.
With the aunt's cruelty I was in sympathy with Martha until they condemned an innocent man to death of the crime. That was when they carried it too far.

Yes, it was completely justifiable. Screw the old hag! :)

I know what you mean. It was morally justifiable homicide. But unfortunately not legally justifiable homicide.

Fans of this film should check out "The Furies" where Barbara Stanwyck really takes some good revenge on Judith Anderson who is moving in on her father and threatening her inheritance. It's ironic that an interview book called "Hollywood Lesbians" ends its interviews with these two women basically kicking the interviewer out for upsetting them with insinuations that are still discussed but not proven in regards to their sexuality. They are both two of my top ten favorite actresses of all times (I like the tough ones), so I like how they handle this intrusive invasion into their personal life.
