Anyone else disappointed with the ending? Spoilers

I enjoyed this film very much. Ann Todd is superb and Mason is at his most brooding and intense. I have trouble accepting the ending to this though.

Given his behaviour during the rest of the film, I found extremely hard to accept that Francesca chose to be with Nicholas at the end. He comes across as controlling and cold and suddenly has a character reversal at the end.

I think I could have accepted his change and her choice, if we had seen his change come about over a longer period of time. The end just comes across as rushed to me. It made me enjoy the film less than I probably would have done otherwise.

Anyone else disappointed? Anyone here who likes the ending?

Go to bed Frank or this is going to get ugly .

The ending was quite a shock for me. After portraying Nicholas as a controlling bully whose the centre of Francesca's psychological problems, for Francesca to then embrace Nicholas as her "true love" was ridiculous.

According to the IMDB triva, Ann Todd and James Mason had an affair during filming. Maybe this offers a plausible explanation to a completely unplausible ending.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

I agree. She should have gone off with the American. But I still liked the film vy much mainly for Ann Todd.

I tried to give the filmmakers the benefit of the doubt, Nicholas seemed to be a better, less selfish person by the end, but, yes, the ending was a bit disappointing. I guess Francesca realized the sacrifices Nicholas had made for her?

Also, minor complaint, but the ending was pretty abrupt as well, but that's not unusual in older films.

I was shocked and unhappy that she chose Nicholas. The American seemed fairly nice. I also would be been happy if she didn't want to be involved with any of them.
